how do I add an email alias?

I'd like to add an alias to a user. Example: john@contoso.com also happens to be our accountant, so I'd like to add an alias so that emails sent to accounting@contoso.com will show up on John's inbox.

I know I can create a 1 man group (which is what I have now), but want to know if there is a way to add an alias instead.
