Email Migration Ex2007 to Office 365 with SRD to Simple Mail Provider

Hi,

I have a question surrounding migration of our existing Exchange 2007 server to a split domain system between xyz host (simple pop and imap) and Exchange Online.

In our company has only about 25 users require Office 365, we also have about 150 users (franchisees) that require only simple mail (POP3/IMAP), and not a full blown Exchange Mailbox.

These are all currently on our exchange server (2007), so for obvious cost savings, we will be moving the franchisee mailboxes to a POP3/IMAP server hosted elsewhere, and our internal users/shared mailboxes, etc, to office 365. The tricky part is that we need to keep all emails on the same domain, so will be using Split Domain Routing (SDR).

I have tested the split domain routing between using a test domain name between Office365 and our other provider, and am happy with the result. All mail flows seemlessly, but what I need to do now is plan our split and migration.

My initial thought was to first migrate off the franchisee emails to the POP3/IMAP server by setting the existing exchange server (2007) and the third party provider up in an SDR environment. My question then, of course is can the migration of the remaining accounts then be easily handled to office 365 with an the SDR already in place? or would another approach be recommended.

I was also considering a Staged Approach, using DirSync (Win Azure AD Sync Tool) but wasn't sure of the best approach given.

1. that we will be on a O365 Small Business Plan and I'm not sure of the compatability

2. not all users need to be migrated to office 365

3. this migration is also a move from our current hosted domain (Exchange/Terminal Services Evironment), and as a result, we'll be bringing reconfiguring our local dhcp server onsite to be the primary (and only) domain controller (this will also mean that it's the only server we'll have so the requirement to run dirsync on another server won't be available down the track.

4. We 'would' also like to set up a single sign on, but we might be out of luck here if we only have the one server.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
